Dasi Three-year Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Results
نویسنده
چکیده
We present the analysis of the complete 3-year data set obtained with the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI) polarization experiment, operating from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station. Additional data obtained at the end of the 2002 Austral winter and throughout the 2003 season were added to the data from which the first detection of polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation was reported. The analysis of the combined data supports, with increased statistical power, all of the conclusions drawn from the initial data set. In particular, the detection of E-mode polarization is increased to 6.3σ confidence level, TE cross-polarization is detected at 2.9σ, and B-mode polarization is consistent with zero, with an upper limit well below the level of the detected E-mode polarization. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of the cosmological model that has emerged from CMB temperature measurements. The analysis also demonstrates that contamination of the data by known sources of foreground emission is insignificant. Status of CMB Polarization Measurements from DASI and Other Experiments
We review the current status and future plans for polarization measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation, as well as the cosmology these measurements will address. After a long period of increasingly sensitive upper limits, the DASI experiment has detected the E -mode polarization and both the DASI and WMAP experiments have detected the TE correlation. These detections provide c...
متن کاملMeasuring Polarization with Dasi
We describe an experiment to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) with the Degree Angular Scale Interferometer (DASI), a compact microwave interferometer optimized to detect CMB anisotropy at multipoles l ≃ 140 – 900. The telescope has operated at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station since 2000 January. The telescope was retrofit as a polarimeter during th...
متن کاملImpact of Foregrounds on Cosmic Microwave Background Maps
We discuss the possible impact of astrophysical foregrounds on three recent exciting results of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments: the WMAP measurements of the temperature-polarization (TE) correlation power spectrum, the detection of CMB polarization fluctuations on degree scales by the DASI experiment, and the excess power on arcminute scales reported by the CBI and BIMA groups. A...
متن کاملInterferometric polarimetry of the cosmic microwave background: Methodology
Interferometry has long been used in radio astronomy to enable imaging of astronomical sources with angular resolutions exceeding the diffraction limit of a single aperture. In the past decade, interferometry of the CMB has been carried out with instruments such as the CBI, DASI and VSA which exploited the inherent instrumental stability and simplicity of ell-space analysis of interferometer da...
متن کاملDetection of polarization in the cosmic microwave background using DASI. Degree Angular Scale Interferometer.
The past several years have seen the emergence of a standard cosmological model, in which small temperature differences in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation on angular scales of the order of a degree are understood to arise from acoustic oscillations in the hot plasma of the early Universe, arising from primordial density fluctuations. Within the context of this model, recent meas...
